Police in Brazil on Friday confirmed that the Greek ambassador to the country was murdered, the G1 news portal reported.
Kyriakos Amiridis had been found in a burnt-out car earlier Friday. He had been last seen on Monday in the Baixada Fluminense region north of Rio de Janeiro.
Investigators are seeking the arrest of Amiridis’ Brazilian widow on suspicion that she was an accomplice in her husband’s death. She had reported her husband missing four days ago.
The car, which had licence plates matching that of the rental car the 59-year-old was using, was found in the Nova Iguacu district of Rio, G1 reported, citing police.
Greece’s diplomatic delegation to Brazil said it last communicated with Amiridis on Monday, and embassy sources told the daily Folha de Sao Paulo the ambassador was officially on holiday until January 9.
Formerly consul in Rio de Janeiro from 2001 to 2004, Amiridis took up his ambassadorial post in the capital Brasilia at the beginning of 2016.
